🌳 About Tamarind Tree Wood
The tamarind tree, native to India, is deeply rooted in Indian culture, religions and cuisine, known for its versatile fruit used in cooking and traditional medicine since 2000 B.C 🌿
Tamarind hardwood has been used as cutting board since ages. It is often called as Butcher's Cutting Board because of its lasting durability, high hardness factor, strong density, health safety, solid nature, unique criss-cross fiber grains, gentle on knife blades, anti bacterial and natural organic properties, ease of use, hygiene, aesthetic stylish look and excellent performance in the kitchen. 🪵
Tamarind wood holds spiritual significance in various cultures, where it is associated with divine purity and protection. It is often used in sacred fires (homas) and is believed to ward off negative energies. The tree is considered sacred in some traditions, with rituals performed before using its wood.🙏✨
Tamarind, also known as Tamarindus indica, is an evergreen tree native to India. It is a slow growing tree, with a lifespan of up to 200 years. We sustainably source tamarind trees from the Western Ghats of Kerala that have naturally reached the end of their lifecycle, typically at 40-50 years old, when their fruiting capacity declines. This ensures our resources are harvested responsibly, without harming the environment. 🌏
⚙️ Technical Highlights
Exceptional Hardness [Janka Scale]: Tamarind wood has a Janka hardness rating of approximately ~11,263 Newton (2,530 pound-force), making it significantly harder than many popular hardwoods. This exceptional hardness makes it extremely resistant to scratches, dents, and wear.
Density: Tamarind wood is very dense[900–1,200 kg/m³ (56–75 lb/ft³)], which contributes to its durability and ability to withstand heavy use without warping or cracking.
Grain Pattern: The grain is criss-cross interlocked and wavy, giving it a distinctive, striking appearance and natural grip. This is one of the reasons tamarind wood is valued for aesthetic and safe applications like cutting boards and butchers block since ages!
Tensile Strength: Tamarind wood has a high modulus of rupture [MOR], often exceeding 110 MPa, meaning it can endure significant mechanical stress without breaking.
Moisture Resistance: Tamarind wood has a low shrinkage rate and is naturally resistant to moisture absorption, making it less prone to warping or splitting.
Durability: Tamarind is classified as a highly durable wood. Its dense fibers make it resistant to insect attacks, fungal decay, and general wear over time.
Color and Appearance: Tamarind wood features light sapwood with creamy tones and dark, rich heartwood with deep reddish-brown or black streaks. This high-contrast appearance makes it visually stunning and unique compared to other hardwoods.
Flexural Modulus [Elasticity]: Tamarind wood has a high modulus of elasticity [MOE] of around 12–15 GPa, which ensures good flexibility and resistance to cracking under heavy loads.
Thermal Resistance: Tamarind wood is naturally thermally stable, which helps it resist expansion or contraction in extreme temperatures.
🌏 Sustainable Sourcing
A Circular Approach to Nature’s Gifts: Tamarind trees often reach the end of their fruiting cycle after decades of productivity. Instead of discarding them, we carefully repurpose the wood into beautiful and durable products, breathing new life into nature’s treasures.
Minimal Environmental Impact: Our sourcing practices minimize environmental impact by working with local communities and maintaining eco-friendly methods.
Supporting Local Communities: We collaborate with small, local daily wage communities to ethically source tamarind wood, providing them with sustainable daily income.
